In this session, I taught how to drape the back piece of a dress on the dress form, including marking darts, grainlines, and attaching the front piece.

I also showed a trick for adding a waist tie detail by creating an opening in the front draping.

Lesson Steps:

  • Placed muslin fabric on dress form, positioning center back along straight grain
  • Pinned fabric around neckline, shoulders, and armholes, smoothing fabric
  • Decided on semi-fitted look through back darts vs straight sheath style
  • Marked back darts, waistline, and other references with pencil/pen
  • Attached front piece at side seams to back, leaving room for movement
  • Demonstrated potential waist tie detail by making opening in front drape
  • Explained options for using stretch fabrics, zippers, etc based on final fabric choice
  • Showed how to style the dress in different ways by adjusting the waist tie
