In this session, I taught a technique to create a 3D drape effect on a flat fabric surface, which can then be transferred to a dress form or your own body shape.
I demonstrated using a lightweight fabric like wool or rayon with a softer drape to better showcase the 3D effect. Heavier fabrics like muslin can create too much volume and obscure the design elements.
Lesson Steps:
- Fold the fabric in half along the selvedge and cross-grain lines.
- Stitch a line about 1 cm from the fold, extending 15 inches down (or measure from center front to center back diagonally for your body).
- Lock the stitching at the end to prevent unraveling.
- This stitched line will create a fold that can be draped towards the back when transferred to the dress form.
- The length of the stitched line can be adjusted based on your desired drape placement and effect.
- I demonstrated on a size 6 dress form, but you can apply this technique to any size by measuring your own body proportions.
