In this session, I taught about the different options for finishing the neckline, armholes, and hem of a draped dress pattern, including facing, lining, or leaving it unlined.

I demonstrated on a dress form how to determine the facing pattern pieces by pinning and tracing the desired facing area.

I discussed various finishing techniques like facing, lining or leaving the dress unlined based on fabric choice. I showed how to draft a facing pattern piece by pinning the desired area on the dress form.

Lesson Steps:

  • Decide on facing vs lining vs leaving unlined based on fabric weight/opacity
  • For facing, pin desired area on dress form and trace onto pattern paper
  • Ensure facing pattern has same grainline as dress front
  • Add seam allowances to facing pattern
  • For lining, cut dress pieces in lining fabric and treat as underlining
  • Finish lining edges by binding, French seams or overlock based on preference
  • For unlined dresses in drapey fabrics, consider binding hem instead of narrow hem
