In this session, I demonstrated how to prepare the muslin fabric for draping an oversized shirt. I used a soft, drapey fabric instead of the typical crisp muslin to better show how the garment will drape on the body.

I showed how to prepare the front and back muslin pieces by drawing the grainlines, pinning the fabric layers together, and tracing the pattern pieces onto the muslin. I marked important lines like the bust, waist, and hip to aid in draping.

Lesson Steps:

  • Choose a soft, drapey fabric instead of crisp muslin
  • For the front piece:
    • Draw a straight grainline 3-4 inches from the selvage
    • Fold fabric along grainline and pin layers together
    • Place pattern piece and trace onto muslin, including bust/waist/hip lines
    • Cut out front muslin piece
  • For the back piece:
    • Draw center back grainline
    • Pin fabric layers together along grainline
    • Place back pattern piece and trace onto muslin
    • Mark bust/waist/hip lines
    • Cut out back muslin piece
