In this lesson, I taught how to drape an envelope-style skirt with pleats for the Amanda dress.

I demonstrated draping from the back to front, creating the pleated and draped effect in the front, and fitting the skirt to flatter a curvier figure. I also showed how to mark pattern pieces and prepare them for the next stage.

Lesson Steps:

  • Prepare large muslin piece and mark straight grain
  • Start draping from center back, keeping grain lines straight
  • Shape side seams and create back darts
  • Drape front, lifting fabric to create tapered silhouette
  • Form pleats in front and pin in place
  • Fit waist and adjust ease
  • Mark all style lines, darts, pleats and reference points
  • Cut curved hemline in front
  • Drape under-layer of skirt
  • Check overall balance and fit of complete skirt
