In this lesson, I teach how to sew the skirt portion of the dress, which involves several intricate steps as it’s an envelope skirt with pleats and a fully lined design. I explain the process of closing darts, attaching the back from the zipper down, and clean finishing the hem before pleating the front.

I demonstrated sewing the skirt of this envelope dress with pleats and a fully lined design. I closed darts, attached the back from the zipper down, and prepared for pleating by clean finishing the hem.

Lesson Steps:

  • Close the darts on the top fabric (matte side)
  • Attach the back from the zipper down on top fabric
  • Close darts on the lining fabric
  • Attach back of lining from zipper down
  • Clean finish the hem by attaching lining and top fabric
  • Sew top pieces together at waist
  • Create front envelope pleats on dress form
  • Attach skirt to bodice
  • Insert zipper
  • Hand sew lining at waist and zipper area
