In this session, I taught how to draft and create a puff sleeve design for a dress.

We explored different puff sleeve styles like Victorian sleeves with volume at the top and slimmer at the bottom.

I demonstrated techniques to add volume and puffiness at the top of the sleeve around the armhole area, while keeping it slim towards the elbow/wrist. This creates a dramatic puff sleeve look that’s balanced with a slim arm. We went through multiple iterations to get the desired puff sleeve shape.

Lesson Steps:

  • Analyzed different puff sleeve inspiration images and identified the key design elements
  • Started with a basic sleeve pattern and made slashes/cuts to open up the top area
  • Spread apart the slashed sections to add volume/puffiness at the top sleeve cap
  • Kept the sleeve slim towards the elbow by not adding extra width there
  • Tried out the pattern in muslin, made adjustments to get the perfect puff shape
  • Finalized the puff sleeve pattern with enough volume at the top and a slim elbow
  • Discussed fabric options like taffeta, organza to support the puff sleeve shape
