In this lesson, I demonstrated an alternative way to create a skirt with less flare, suitable for heavier fabrics, petite frames, or when you want a more fitted silhouette.
Instead of using one and a half circles for the skirt, I showed how to use just a single circle cut slightly below the waist.
Lesson Steps:
- Cut a single circle for the skirt, taking the measurement slightly below the waist instead of at the high waist
- Fold the circle in half and clip the center front
- Pin the center front of the skirt to the dress form, slightly above the actual center front
- Match the center back of the skirt to the dress form, allowing it to hang naturally
- Identify the desired style lines and create flares by clipping and dropping the fabric along those lines
- Mark the style lines with chalk or baste with a contrasting thread
- Sew along the marked style lines, leaving a clean seam allowance
- This method results in a skirt that is more fitted around the waist and hips, with the flare starting lower
- It requires less fabric (about 3 yards for a half-circle skirt) compared to a one and a half circle skirt
