In this lesson, I taught how to attach a thin waistband to a dress.

I cut strips of fabric on the cross-grain to make a non-stretchy waistband. Then I sewed the strips together to create one long waistband piece.

I demonstrated attaching the waistband to the dress – one side on the inside of the front drape, and the other side on the outside. This creates a clean, finished look with the waistband straps framing the front drape.

Lesson Steps:

  • Cut 1.25″ wide cross-grain strips for the waistband
  • Sew the strips together end-to-end to make one long waistband piece
  • Finish the raw edges of the waistband by turning under and stitching
  • Attach one side of the waistband to the inside of the front drape piece by hand-stitching
  • Attach the other side of the waistband to the outside of the front drape piece
  • Try on the dress to ensure the waistband lays smoothly and looks neat
