In this lesson, I taught how to create a controlled flare skirt using draping techniques. I demonstrated how to strategically cut and manipulate fabric to control the flare in specific areas, creating a flattering silhouette without gathers or pleats at the waist. This method allows for more customization than traditional circle or A-line skirts.
Lesson Steps:
- Prepare fabric and align waistline reference
- Pin center front on straight grain
- Create controlled flares on front piece:
- Make first cut before princess seam
- Add second flare about 1.5 inches away
- Create third flare near side seam
- Pin and adjust flares to desired fullness
- Repeat process for back piece, adding more flare
- Leave space at center back for zipper
- Mark side seams and connect pieces
- Evaluate overall shape and adjust as needed
- Mark final lines for pattern making
- Hang draped pieces for 12-24 hours before finalizing pattern
- Transfer to pattern paper, making necessary adjustments
Remember, this technique gives you more control over the skirt’s shape and allows for customization based on body type and design preferences.
