In this lesson, I taught how to create a controlled flare skirt using draping techniques. I demonstrated how to strategically cut and manipulate fabric to control the flare in specific areas, creating a flattering silhouette without gathers or pleats at the waist. This method allows for more customization than traditional circle or A-line skirts.

Lesson Steps:

  1. Prepare fabric and align waistline reference
  2. Pin center front on straight grain
  3. Create controlled flares on front piece:
    • Make first cut before princess seam
    • Add second flare about 1.5 inches away
    • Create third flare near side seam
  4. Pin and adjust flares to desired fullness
  5. Repeat process for back piece, adding more flare
  6. Leave space at center back for zipper
  7. Mark side seams and connect pieces
  8. Evaluate overall shape and adjust as needed
  9. Mark final lines for pattern making
  10. Hang draped pieces for 12-24 hours before finalizing pattern
  11. Transfer to pattern paper, making necessary adjustments

Remember, this technique gives you more control over the skirt’s shape and allows for customization based on body type and design preferences.
