In this lesson, I taught how to create a unique draped sleeve using a square fabric and pleating techniques. I demonstrated how to manipulate fabric to create interesting designs and transform them into a functional sleeve. This technique allows for creativity and customization in sleeve design.
Lesson Steps:
- Cut a 17×17 inch square fabric and mark the bias line
- Create pleats on the fabric, similar to a peg skirt
- Place the pleated fabric on the dress form and mark the armhole line
- Transfer the armhole markings to the fabric
- Match the pleated fabric to a sleeve pattern muslin
- Draw the sleeve pattern on paper, incorporating the pleats
- Add seam allowances and cut out the pattern
- Sew the pleats and close the sides of the sleeve
- Pin the finished sleeve to the dress form
- Try on the sleeve to check fit and appearance
I emphasized that this technique can be adapted to create various sleeve designs and encouraged experimentation with different fabrics and pleat sizes to achieve desired effects.
