In this lesson, I teach how to drape a basic straight skirt on a dress form, incorporating darts to achieve the desired fit.
Lesson Steps:
- Prepare muslin pieces for the front and back skirt panels based on hip measurements
- Pin the front muslin panel to the dress form, aligning with center front and hip line
- Mark the princess line and divide the excess fabric into two darts
- Pin and mark the first and second darts on the front panel
- Repeat the process for the back panel, marking the princess line and dividing excess into two darts
- Trim excess fabric along the side seams, leaving enough ease
- Mark the waistline, hip line, and hem line on both front and back panels
- Adjust the side seams, allowing for appropriate ease at the waist and hips
- Optional: Mark lines to create an A-line or tapered skirt shape from the hip line down
