In this lesson, I taught how to cut and prepare the pieces for an experimental geometric odd shape dress using a lightweight interlock jersey fabric. I demonstrated how to measure, fold, and cut the fabric for the main body and sleeves, creating unique curved patterns.

Lesson Steps:

  • Measure and cut a large piece of jersey fabric (about 75 inches long)
  • Fold the fabric and create the main body shape with a curved bottom
  • Draw and cut a curved sleeve pattern based on arm measurements
  • Mark and cut openings for the armholes
  • Prepare all pieces for sewing, leaving the neckline to be determined during draping

In this experimental process, I created several unusual-looking pattern pieces. While I’m not entirely sure how the final product will turn out, that’s the exciting part of this creative exercise. The next step will be to take everything to the sewing machine and start putting it all together. We’ll determine the neckline during the draping process on the dress form.
