In this session, I introduced the concept of creative draping using geometric cutting techniques for jersey, knits, and stretchy fabrics. I focused on three basic shapes: rectangular, square, and triangle, demonstrating how to cut, sew, and drape these shapes on a dress form. This lesson is designed to be playful and introduce students to fluid, different shapes in clothing design.
Lesson Steps:
- Introduce the concept of geometric cutting for jersey fabrics
- Demonstrate basic shapes (rectangular, square, triangle) on paper
- Cut fabric into the basic shapes
- Sew and put together the cut pieces
- Drape the sewn pieces on a dress form
- Show how each shape looks individually on the dress form
- Teach basic t-shirt foundation and close-fitting t-shirt foundation
- Explain how to use t-shirt foundation as lining for draping pieces
- Encourage students to experiment and create their own designs
