In this lesson, I taught how to create a puffed cap sleeve from a basic sleeve pattern. I demonstrated how to modify the pattern, add volume, and create gathers for a cute, short sleeve with a slight puff at the top.
Lesson Steps:
- Transfer the basic sleeve pattern to the elbow length
- Mark the desired sleeve length (just below the cap)
- Adjust the underarm area for a snugger fit
- Trim the top of the sleeve to create a rounder shape
- Create spread lines on the pattern for volume
- Open up the center to the zero point at the bottom
- Spread the pattern pieces to add volume
- Blend the new lines using a curve ruler
- Add seam allowances and notches
- Cut out the new pattern and prepare for fitting
- Pin and gather the sleeve to the bodice
- Try on and make adjustments as needed
- Consider adding a button or creating a small tuck at the bottom for ease of wear
- Make final adjustments to the pattern based on the fitting
