In this lesson, I taught how to cut basic geometric shapes for dressmaking. I demonstrated cutting rectangles, squares, and triangles from jersey fabric, explaining the measurements and techniques for each shape. I also showed how to adjust measurements based on dress form size.

Lesson Steps:

1. Cut two rectangular pieces 30 inches wide and 19 inches long
2. Cut a square piece 30 inches by 30 inches
3. Cut a triangle piece:

  • Start with fabric 43 inches long and 30 inches wide
  • Mark the center of the width
  • Measure 8 inches from the side for the top
  • Mark 7 inches on each side from the center for the bottom
  • Connect the marks to form the triangle

4. Cut additional shapes for practice and experimentation
5. Cut a rectangular piece for the bottom, about 16 inches wide and 26 inches long
6. Cut two more triangle pieces, 32 inches in length

I emphasized the importance of adjusting measurements based on individual body size and encouraged students to try different shapes to see what works best for their body type.
