In this session, I explain how to create facing and lining patterns for various bodice and skirt designs. I cover different techniques for making facings, including how to draft them for basic bodices, princess seam bodices, and skirts, as well as how to incorporate linings with facings. I also provide tips on interfacing, seam allowances, and how to handle darts when creating lining patterns.

Steps for creating facing patterns:

  1. Determine the area you want to face (usually neckline and armholes).
  2. Draw the facing shape on your pattern, typically 1-2 inches wide.
  3. Transfer the facing shape to paper to create a separate pattern piece.
  4. Add seam allowances and necessary pattern markings.
  5. Label the pattern piece with cutting instructions and interfacing information.

Steps for creating lining patterns:

  1. Use the main pattern pieces as a base for the lining.
  2. Adjust the seam allowances at neckline and armholes to be slightly smaller.
  3. Consider simplifying darts in the lining pattern.
  4. Transfer the adjusted pattern to paper.
  5. Label the lining pattern pieces with cutting instructions.

These are my personal content and techniques that I’ve developed through my experience in dressmaking and teaching.
